Crime rates by city

One of the big factors in determining both relocations and local quality of life is crime rates by city. These rates give people an idea, or at least the perception, of which cities are safe and which are not. In this first part of a series, we take a look at violent and property crime rates for all US cities with populations at or above 250,000.

To make the comparison, I used the FBI’s Uniform Crime data, which generally goes back to the 1980s. I won’t be going back quite that far, but I will compare 3 different more recent years for each city and rank them.

Some caveats with the data: UCI collects voluntary data, so cities provide the data themselves to the FBI rather than the FBI collecting it directly.  This means that cities can potentially fudge the data if they want to by reporting fewer crimes than actually occurred.  Cities, especially those in high tourism states, have some incentive to do this given perceived safety is extremely important to economic outcomes.  That said, it’s not exactly a free-for-all reporting system, either.  There are certain standards that have to be met for data to be accepted, and reported numbers are occasionally rejected and not included in the UCI data.

In the above ranking, red cities were those that saw their violent crime rankings worsen vs. the previous decade, while blue cities have seen their rankings improve vs. the previous decade. Black cities are those that saw no ranking change. Keep in mind that although rankings may have changed for the better or worse, their actual violent crime rates may have moved in the opposite direction.

It’s somewhat surprising just how dangerous many Sun Belt cities were in the early 2000s- and still are in some cases- despite never earning nearly any negative reputation that cities like Chicago, New York, Philly and others had. Even today, cities like Chicago are constantly mentioned for being a violent city, but yet Las Vegas, Miami, Houston, Orlando, Indianapolis and many other cites all have higher violent crime rates. It’s a classic example of both how perception is often not supported by the evidence, and how media can push skewed narratives.
Looking at Ohio cities, specifically, the picture overall is not great.  Both Cleveland and Toledo are in the top 25 cities with the highest violent crime rates, and both rates increasing.  Cincinnati was somewhat all over the place, with its rate skyrocketing 2000-2010, but then plummeting 2010-2020 to fall out of the top 25.  Columbus, meanwhile, has been in a consistent- if not slower- decline that put it outside of the top 50 by 2020.

Overall, the majority of cities saw their violent crime rates fall between 2000-2020. This, again, goes contrary to the existing narrative that cities are becoming more dangerous. The pandemic and its economic effects have caused some spikes in some places, but long-term, it remains to be seen if these trends continue or abate.

Columbus moved up from 7th to 4th in total Black, non-Hispanic during the period. Surprisingly, quite a few cities have actually been losing this demographic since 2010 at least.

Finally, Columbus moved up from 6th to 5th in the total of Other, non-Hispanic population. Overall, Columbus ranks fairly well in totals vs. its peers, as one might expect given that it is one of the largest cities in the grouping. However, to truly find out how it compares with these other cities, you have to look at percentages, which tells how much of the city’s population is made up of each group.

Columbus ranks in the middle of the pack for its % of Non-Hispanic White population. Like in most cities, even while this demographic is growing in total numbers in Columbus, the % of total population continues to fall.

Columbus ranked in the top 3rd of peer cities for its % of Non-Hispanic Black population.

Columbus also ranked in the top 3rd for its Non-Hispanic Asian population.

Columbus ranks poorly with Hispanics in the group, ranking near the bottom.

Finally, Columbus ranks in the middle for its Non-Hispanic Other population.

So what’s the final ranking for where Columbus is with diversity compared to its peers in 2017? To find out, I assigned points based on ranked position in each 5 racial categories and took the average of the positions in each 5. The result is that the higher the average number, the lower the overall diversity.

So based on this, Columbus ranks in the top half of national and Midwest peers for diversity.

Columbus had a high number of Europeans versus most peers, but almost all cities saw drops in this demographic between 2000 and 2017, some quite drastic. Columbus’ drop was relatively minor.

Now that we have the full set of 2017 population estimates, I wanted to examine a popular claim a little more closely. The claim is that suburban growth far exceeds that of core cities/counties, and it’s often repeated in media throughout the country. One of the things that always bothered me about this was the constant use of basing this claim largely on % change. This has a major flaw, one that I will go into more below.

For this little study on suburban vs urban growth, I will look at the top 50 largest metro areas.

So what’s all this mean? Columbus performs particularly well here. Franklin County attracts a high percentage of the total metro population, and Columbus itself is one of only 5 cities with more than 50% of the metro growth entering the city limits. Even accounting for area size, Columbus does fairly well. This suggests that urban growth there is stronger than in most cities.

2017 metro population estimates

Today, I am going to examine 2017 metro population estimates from the US Census, not only for Ohio, but also Columbus’ peer group that includes Midwest and national metro areas. Midwest peers (outside Ohio) used would be any metro with a population greater than 500,000. National peers would be metros that either started or ended the period 2010-2017 with a population between 1.5-2.5 Million.

As with counties, I am going to start this look with a comparison of overall population.
