2024 Homicide Tracker
2024 ended up with 122 homicides. Not great, especially considering how slow the year began, the higher than normal totals in the second half of the year- particularly in November and December- pushed the total higher than it otherwise would’ve been. Still, 2024 ended up with the fewest homicides in the last 5 years, and represented a roughly 17% decrease from 2023 and a more than 40% decline vs the all-time year of 2021. So some progress, but more needs to be done.
The homicide rate was 13.3 per 100K people, a decrease from 16.1 in 2023.
Other Violent Crime
A total of 1,929 aggravated assaults occurred in 2024. This was 288 fewer than in 2023, representing a 13% decrease. The rate per 100K people was 209.9 in 2024, down from 242.8 in 2023.
1,137 rapes were reported in 2024, 66 fewer than in 2023. This was a 5.5% decrease. The rate per 100K people was 123.7 in 2024, down from 131.7 in 2023.
803 robberies were reported in 2024, 391 fewer than in 2023. This was a 32.7% decline year-over-year. The rate per 100K people was 87.4 in 2024, down from 130.8 in 2023.
A total of 3,991 violent crimes of all types were reported in 2024. This was 576 fewer than 2023 and represented a 12.6% decline. The rate per 100K people was 434.3 in 2024, down from 521.4 in 2023.
Property Crimes
A total of 17 arsons were reported in 2024. This was 7 fewer than in 2023, representing a 29.2% decrease. The rate per 100K people was 1.8 in 2024, down from 2.6 in 2023.
3,703 burglaries were reported in 2024, 422 fewer than in 2023. This was a 10.2% decrease. The rate per 100K people was 402.9 in 2024, down from 451.7 in 2023.
15,618 larceny thefts were reported in 2024, 2,603 fewer than in 2023. This was a 14.3% decrease. The rate per 100K people was 1699.5 in 2024, down from 1995.3 in 2023.
A total of 4,969 motor vehicle thefts occurred in 2023. This was 2,109 fewer than in 2023, a 29.8% decrease. The rate per 100K people was 2644.9 in 2024, down from 3224.8 in 2023.
